Description
Update: this is the finished piece after I darkened the upper corner and the baby's hair and did some general glazing to smooth out the textures.
Done with 4H, 2H, HB, 2B, 6B, and 8B graphite pencil on smooth sketching paper. In the course of this piece, I discovered two things: 1) Prismacolor Scholar pencils are garbage; 2) Cretacolor pencils are high-quality materials and a joy to work with.
The subjects are my daughter, age 9, holding my son, age 4 months, in our living room full of light. I took a lot of photos of them both in that marvelous light, and this one was the best pose and composition, and had the most meaning. She loves babies, and loves our new baby, and that enthusiasm and delight really showed in her face; and I loved the contrast between her happiness and his babyish indifference.

Yeah, it's good to see new life come into a family that's for sure. Even if the baby is now grade school child.
